Incorporating YES

Introduction

This is not a Roger Dean web site, or a complete discography of records that he has participated in the design of. The records listed here** do have the cover designed by Roger Dean, and are for sale. If you are not too familiar with Roger's output, you should be able to find further information elsewhere on the Internet. However, for testament of his outstanding contribution towards the arts and design in the rock world, and beyond, two essential books that should be in one's possession are "Views" and "Magnetic Storm", both published by Dragon's World Ltd, and also reprinted in association with the Book Club Associates. Any in stock will be listed on the labels page.

**The band Yes adopted Roger Dean's talents in design for many of their albums output (as well as their stage presentation), and this page does include records issued by Yes as an entity, and well as solo output. Obviously not all these will include an association with Roger, and this will be stated where appropriate. So to save any confusion, the Yes records are listed as a separate section.

To compliment the design layout of the external gatefold covers,
and to show consistency, all the images on this page are arranged as:
left image = back; right image = front *  interior gatefold sleeves are also depicted (even if not a Dean design)
Any lyric/ illustrated inner sleeves, inserts, or posters that are present are also shown.

As with all other merchandise depicted on this site, all the photographs here portray the actual products that are for sale!
All the records on this page have been professionally cleaned and play graded.

DR. STRANGELY STRANGE "HEAVY PETTING" ~ Vertigo 1970

Norman Barrett, George Lynton, J.D. Hughes, Jim Frank, Peter Soley, Les Williams

This fold-out sleeve is a record retailer's nightmare! There cannot be many in circulation
now that at one time has been bent or torn just by sliding it into a plastic cover!
Quite an intricate design, yet be aware of counterfeits! These were made at least 15 years ago.
These have a counterfeit record, also having the 'swirl' label.

This was the second of two designs that Roger provided Motown, the other being a USA issue of a Rare Earth LP.

Part 2

In general, most Yes albums can be found without any difficulty. However, locating original pressings of their pre 1973 issues in exceptional condition is not so easy!  In fact, after spending considerable time playing the ones to hand, and having to discard a few, the assumption is that many of these did not play perfect from new? The examples on sale here have been professionally cleaned, and then checked for their sound quality, The photographs here illustrate some nice condition examples.

YES "YES" ~ Atlantic 1969

Jon Anderson, Peter Banks, Chris Squire, Bill Bruford, Tony Kaye

First issues with the semi-plum label are not that common in good order, due to the sleeve being slightly 'oversize', hence are usually knocked about at the edges. Inside left of the (single card) gatefold has the inclusion "Manufactured by Polydor Records Ltd...", whereas second issues with the orange and green record labels, and  with the standard size g/f sleeve,  have the statement inside left of the now double card thickness "An Atlantic Record distributed by WEA Records Ltd c 1972".

All issues include a lyric insert. No Roger Dean association.

Three examples in stock:

  2) 2nd issue: Sleeve EX+  *  Insert EX *  Record NM (plays EX to mainly NM)  @ 28
  3) 2nd issue: Sleeve EX- (2 short creases spine side, o/w EX+) * Insert VG+
Record NM (1st 20 seconds VG, o/w plays EX to mainly NM)  @ 14
 4) 2nd issue: Sleeve VG+ *  Insert VG+ *  Record EX+ (plays VG+ to EX+)  @ 7

YES "TIME AND A WORD" ~ Atlantic 1970

Jon Anderson, Peter Banks, Chris Squire, Bill Bruford, Tony Kaye

Their second LP, with first issues having the semi-plum label. Non-gatefold sleeve. Includes a 1-sided lyric insert. Cover design by Laurence Sackman in association with "Graphreaks".

One example in stock:

YES "THE YES ALBUM" ~ Atlantic 1971

Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Bill Bruford, Tony Kaye. Steve Howe.

Their third album, with an uninspiring title! Original issues have semi plum labels, with mid '72 on pressings green. Sleeve design by Jon Goodchild.

Three examples in stock:

1) 1st issue:  Sleeve EX (one small crease on the front, o/w NM)
                       Record EX+  (s2 trk 1 plays EX, rest NM) @ 70

  4) 2nd issue: Sleeve VG+ *  Record NM (plays NM) @ 14

YES "FRAGILE" ~ Atlantic 1971

Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe. Rick Wakeman

Fourth album, nicely presented with an 8 page booklet, the contents being of photographs, and illustrations. This item is affixed within the gatefold, with later pressings of this album having the booklet housed with the disc. The design for the whole package is Roger Dean's first association with Yes.

The final Yes album originally issued with the red / plum Atlantic label. Note that all  the plum label issues have the Atlantic catalogue no. on the spine, while the green label pressings have the K50009 number, label and spine. This criteria applies to all of the first four Yes albums.

examples in stock:

  2) 1st issue:  Sleeve EX (slight rubbing near top border, rest NM) * affixed Booklet M- * Polydor Inner dated Nov 1971

YES "CLOSE TO THE EDGE" ~ Atlantic 1972

Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Bill Bruford. Steve Howe. Rick Wakeman
